Living Without Electricity

 story by: Bos Buhiga  One of the biggest challenges facing rural Rwanda is the lack of reliable access to electricity. While the government has made progress in expanding the national grid, many remote villages remain in the dark. For most rural households, electricity is either unavailable or too expensive, making it difficult to power homes, schools, health centers, and businesses. This lack of electricity affects nearly every aspect of daily life. Children struggle to study at night due to poor lighting, while health centers operate without proper refrigeration for medicines or lighting for nighttime care. Farmers cannot process or store their crops efficiently, and small businesses are unable to grow due to limited energy access. To address this issue, Rwanda has introduced off-grid solutions such as solar panels and mini-grids, but the coverage is still limited. The Struggle Of Cooking Using Firewood

 A Story by: Buhiga Bos It is a life full of brute force and daily sacrifices in the village. Both young and old are involved in the difficult task of finding fire wood to cook food. Finding the right wood to use as energy to cook food , takes time and often requires , villagers to walk for long distances and even involves climbing difficult hills, which is unsafe. But it is a life that the villagers have gotten used to , it is how they were raised and it is a norm that they have accepted in their life. Yes , the dangers are many, from harmful stings from plants and Snakes and bugs to Dangerous sliding and falls. " It is not easy, Yes you can cut your self and get hurt, but it is our life," says a local woman who lives in Bugesera, Nyamata , Kanazi. While , firewood is an uncivilized source of cooking energy, it is still predominant in rural areas in Rwanda and will remain a problem for the low income households.

Standing for Five Hours to Get Water

 Story by: Bos Buhiga It’s late afternoon, and a large group of people waits in line under the scorching sun near a natural spring located at the foot of the Kanazi  Hill , a Cell in the eastern region of Rwanda , Bugesera  As the hours drag on, some people waiting in line with their water containers decide to fetch dirty water from a nearby swamp instead. Being forced to wait in line for spring water is frustrating, but having to collect dirty water is even worse – especially for the residents in this neighborhood.With increasing frequency, the taps in their homes are running dry. " We Have to wait for 4-5 hours to get our chance to fill our jerricanes ," said Jonathan Once the jerricane is full , and carried in the small cell center it can be sold for 200 and 300 Francs, this is quite expensive for the locals.
