Living Without Electricity

 story by: Bos Buhiga

One of the biggest challenges facing rural Rwanda is the lack of reliable access to electricity. While the government has made progress in expanding the national grid, many remote villages remain in the dark. For most rural households, electricity is either unavailable or too expensive, making it difficult to power homes, schools, health centers, and businesses.

This lack of electricity affects nearly every aspect of daily life. Children struggle to study at night due to poor lighting, while health centers operate without proper refrigeration for medicines or lighting for nighttime care. Farmers cannot process or store their crops efficiently, and small businesses are unable to grow due to limited energy access.

To address this issue, Rwanda has introduced off-grid solutions such as solar panels and mini-grids, but the coverage is still limited. Expanding these programs and making them more affordable can help bridge the energy gap. Improving rural electrification is essential for development, education, healthcare, and lifting communities out of poverty.
