Standing for Five Hours to Get Water
Story by: Bos Buhiga
It’s late afternoon, and a large group of people waits in line under the scorching sun near a natural spring located at the foot of the Kanazi Hill , a Cell in the eastern region of Rwanda , Bugesera
As the hours drag on, some people waiting in line with their water containers decide to fetch dirty water from a nearby swamp instead.
Being forced to wait in line for spring water is frustrating, but having to collect dirty water is even worse – especially for the residents in this neighborhood. With increasing frequency, the taps in their homes are running dry.
" We Have to wait for 4-5 hours to get our chance to fill our jerricanes ," said Jonathan
Once the jerricane is full , and carried in the small cell center it can be sold for 200 and 300 Francs, this is quite expensive for the locals.
Getting water first is for the Strongest , the strong ones fight to get water first and weak stay in line untill the fittest fill their jerricanes . This delays them greatly .
" Sometimes , people even fight and cut each other with razors to get water first," said Claire a local water seller.
