The Struggle Of Cooking Using Firewood

It is a life full of brute force and daily sacrifices in the village. Both young and old are involved in the difficult task of finding fire wood to cook food.

Finding the right wood to use as energy to cook food , takes time and often requires , villagers to walk for long distances and even involves climbing difficult hills, which is unsafe.


But it is a life that the villagers have gotten used to , it is how they were raised and it is a norm that they have accepted in their life. Yes , the dangers are many, from harmful stings from plants and Snakes and bugs to Dangerous sliding and falls.


" It is not easy, Yes you can cut your self and get hurt, but it is our life," says a local woman who lives in Bugesera, Nyamata , Kanazi.

While , firewood is an uncivilized source of cooking energy, it is still predominant in rural areas in Rwanda and will remain a problem for the low income households.
